Abstract : The purpose of this study is to estimate and specify the quality of the wood of the pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) and of the sessile oak (Quercus petraea) which constitute a broad leaved timber resource of considerable economic importance, in particular for their aptitude for being used in the wet cooperage. In the last twenty years, it had been noticed: - That the annual request for logs of French oaks for the manufacturing of stave wood had increased regularly to reach 320 000 m3 in 2002, either nearly 10 % of total harvest of French oak, or a fabrication of 650 000 barrels of a capacity of 228 litres which are sold at 500
