Organic matter biodegradation along the aquatic continuum sewer system - waste water treatment plant - river

Abstract : This work is about the characterisation of dissolved organic matter biodegradability. The developed methodology is available along the aquatic continuum sewer system - waste water treatment plant - river in order to respond to the needs of integrated management for the urban domestic pollution. The developed methodology results of the coupling of two methods for the characterisation of organic matter biodegradability: the respirometric method developed by Xu et Hasselblad (1996) to assess the readily biodegradable organic matter fraction and the batch method of Tusseau et al. (2003) to measure the inert fraction. An optimisation method, based on the optimal control theory, is used to combine opitimally the ASM3 model (developed by the International Water Association) and experimental data in order to fractionate organic matter in classes of biodegradability. Experiments were conducted to revisit the degradation of acetate (called SS in ASM3) by waste water treatment plant sludges. So, we valid the correct fonctionnement of ASM3 and develop a derived model (modèle ASM3z). Futhermore, we introduced a new dissolved organic matter compartment (SS type) in ASM3, called S2. S2 degradation induces supplementary oxygen consumption when storing it in cell and consequently permits to simulate the wastewater biodegradability in a best way. This new model is called ASM3z_S2. Results obtained with ASM3z_S2 are reliable and show that is possible to quantify the different organic matter fractions (S2 and SS), in wastewater and river water.
