Model of tire/road contact for the bearing noise forecast

Abstract : These last twenty years car manufacturers gradually reduced the noise emitted by the vehicles by an action on the sources of mechanical origin (reduction of the engine noise, better design of the transmissions and improvement of the silencers...). It proves now that the noise of tyre/road contact is the principal source of the noise at speeds greater than 50 Km/h. The generation of the contact noise has sources in many phenomena implying complicated mechanisms. One of the principal phenomena is vibrations of the tire due to the roughness of the roadway. To model the vibrations of the tire, it is necessary to know the vibration behaviour of the tire and to know the contact forces. The contact problem between a tire and a roadway is a three-dimensional dynamic contact which is difficult to model in full details. The models of contact with the roadway used call upon a simple 2D modeling and the existing models of 3D contact are too heavy to be calculated. In this thesis we make a contribution to study the contact forces generated by the influence of the roadway roughness in order to have a good approximation of the tire vibrations sources and to predict the noise. We developed a 3D semi analytical model which was validated by experiments for an elastic and viscoelastic contact with various shapes. The experimental and numerical validation of the model for an elastic multipoint contact was studied. We finished by an application of the method to solve a contact problem on a model profile of roadways.
