Compréhension de la biréfringence et du couplage de mode de polarisation dans les fibres de télécommunications

Abstract : The domain of optical telecommunication is characterized by an increasing demand for better transmission capacity. One wants to transmit larger amount of information as new applications are appearing. However, some limitations are still present, like dispersive effects that degrade transmission performances. Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) is such an effect which is time broadening due to the dependence of the group velocity to the signal polarization. To overcome this effect, there are two common approaches. The first consists in mitigating PMD during transmission. The second, used in this thesis, consists in producing low PMD fibre by intervening at fabrication process level. In the first part of our work, we studied birefringence, which is the cause of PMD. We showed that the mechanical stress ,frozen in the fibre during drawing, has an important contribution to the birefringence. As a second step, we studied the effect of spinning the fibre as it is drawn. We found that a triangular spinning permit to efficiently decrease PMD. Finally, we used two experimental methods to characterise birefringence and spinning of the fibre. We obtain some experimental validation of the theoretical results obtained in the two first parts of this work. This study leads to deduce simple rules which permit to reduce PMD of high birefringence fibre.
