Modélisation des aérosols de pollution en Ile-de-France

Abstract : Aerosol modeling is a challenging scientific problem aimed at improving our knowledge in the complex processes involved in aerosol emissions, multiphase chemistry and transport. Current chemistry-transport models include sophisticated aerosol parameterizations and need to be evaluated against! observations to assess their performances. However, the evalu! ation of the space-time variability of simulated aerosol concentrations is fairly lacunar, mostly based on episode situations and ground measurements. The aim of this thesis is to provide an extensive three-dimensional evaluation of the aerosol model performances in polluted urban environment based on the complementary use of routine aerosol surface measurements and available optical data issued from lidar vertical profiles, Sun photometer and satellite measurements. Therefore, the multi-scale aerosol model CHIMERE has been improved and applied for the episodic and long-term simulations of tropospheric aerosols over Europe and over the Paris region. The statistical validation of the model has been achieved using ground PM measurements, lidar vertical profiles and integrated satellite measurements. An original validation approach has been developed in order to simulate the aerosol optical properties from model outputs and to compare them directly with the observed remote sensing data! . Additionally, the ESQUIF campaign measurements have been used to assess the ability of the model to simulate aerosol size distribution and composition. This extensive model validation allows both the identification and the reduction of modeling errors, and the characterization of the aerosol properties in the vicinity of an urban agglomeration.
