Vitrocéramiques oxyfluorées transparentes dopées par des ions lanthanides. Matériaux nano-composites luminescents à 1.5 μm

Abstract : This work is devoted to the study of transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramics for the development of devices using optical amplification. The idea is to obtain more interesting materials than those that are currently used, i.e. single-crystals (which are difficult to synthesize and to shape) and glasses (with low optical and thermo-mechanical properties). Glass-ceramics, synthesized by the devitrification of a germanate glass (GeO2-PbO-PbF2), are formed of an amorphous oxide phase with fluoride nanocrystallites embedded into it. The originality of this work consists in developing glass-ceramics doped with several lanthanides fluorides (ErF3, YbF3 and CeF3) to optimize the absorption of these materials at 980 nm and their 1.5-μm emission, which corresponds to the maximum transparency of silica optical fibbers used in the telecommunication field. The study of the structure and morphology of the glass-ceramics, according to the nature of the doping ions Ln3+ and the thermal treatment, enabled to obtain a really good comprehension of the devitrification mechanisms. It has also evidenced the segregation of Ln3+ inside the nanocrystallites and not in the glassy phase of the glass-ceramics. Moreover, studies by optical spectroscopies as well as by electron paramagnetic resonance helped us to determine the localization of the doping ions in the ß-PbF2 network and to understand the optical properties of the glass-ceramics. Er3+ and Yb3+ ions are situated in cubic symmetry sites and also form clusters, probably hexameric. The proportion of the two types of Ln3+ depends on the Ln3+ concentration in these materials. The optical properties of these materials are similar to those of bulk ß-PbF2 single-crystals doped with Ln3+, synthesized as references in this work. As a result, glass-ceramics are probably as interesting as single-crystals for laser applications, with much easier synthesis. With glass-ceramics, it can be considered to develop optical amplifiers with big size and various shapes: plates, fibbers etc.
