Chocs laser sur le diamant, l hélium et l hydrogène: une etude experimentale de la ''Warm Dense Matter.

Abstract : The determination of the equations of state of helium, hydrogen and diamond at very high density is an important problem at the frontier between condensed matter physics and plasma physics (also called "Warm Dense Matter" domain) and with important implications in planetary physics for understanding the formation of giant and extrasolar planets. Due to the limitations of the conventional techniques (static or single shock compression) for reaching the relevant densities of most of the interior of Jupiter, data are really scarce. Combining a static and a dynamical approach offers a new set of possibilities to explore phase diagrams. In these experiments, accurate ! measurements are essential to be able to compare with the vari! ous theo ries. In this Ph'D work, a new metrology based on quartz as a reference material has been developed for this purpose. Precise pressure, temperature, density and reflectivity measurements can now be obtained. We will discuss results obtained on diamond (maximum on the melting curve), on helium (validation of Saumon-Chabrier model), on hydrogen (continuous transition between a non conducting and a conducting state) and on hydrogen/helium mixtures (no obvious sign of a phase transition).
