Abstract : The detailed study of reservoir (oil/gas, CO2 and waste storage...) architecture is first a stratigraphic challenge, more specifically for continental series. The geometry of such deposits is under the influence of three main factors: sea-level changes (eustasy), tectonics and climate. This study aims at understanding their role in the architecture of the continental deposits, in the Miocene (~13.5-23 Ma) of the Digne Foreland Basin (Southeast France). These deposits were chosen because of a well constrained stratigraphy and good outcrops conditions. Sequence stratigraphy of the succession lead to a distinction between a northern and a southern zone. The former recorded seven third order-sequences, whereas two of them disappear towards the south. Regional tectonics played on the amplitude and the age of sequences, when compared with the eustatic charts. It is interpreted as the depocentre migration during the basin infilling. Climate played a role a various scales of time. The Climatic Optimum of the Middle Miocene (14.6-16.5 Ma) is marked by three global events: the carbon isotope excursion of the "Monterey Event", a major transgression (Langian) and the climax of the Avicennia mangrove development. Climato-eustatic origin of the third order sequences in the Langhian-Serravallian time interval is shown by comparison of the sequence stratigraphy and palynology data. At the scale of the Milankovitch cycles, eccentricity cycles were observed in the frequency of marine incursions, precession and obliquity cycles were reported from the distribution and development of paleosols, thanks to a direct comparison to the insolation curve.
