Regulation of concrete production

Abstract : Concrete producers must guarantee the quality of their products, which induces a suitable control of the composition of the concrete produced. However, changes in the aggregate water content make the precise dosage of the various constituents difficult. The aim of this work is then to propose methods for the improvement of water dosage consistency, and for the on-line monitoring of workability, in the context of industrial concrete production. An original procedure is first proposed to calibrate the watt-meter, seen as a probe to assess the fresh concrete water content. Then, from these calibrated measurements various algorithms are developed. With the first category, it is possible to correct the difference in water dosage from a batch to another one in the same truck. The second category deals with a semi-automatic calibration of aggregate water probes. These methods are validated from data acquired in industrial ready-mix concrete plants. To monitor the concrete workability, a power model is developed, linking the concrete rheological parameters and the total power spent by the mixer. This process, which requires the possibility to change the mixer speed, was validated with mixers of several sizes (from laboratory to industrial, scale-1 mixers). Finally it is now possible to assess the yield stress and the slump of the concrete currently mixed, without prior knowledge of its composition.
