Une rupture totale. Le licenciement massif des salariés de Moulinex

Abstract : The purpose of this Ph-D is to study the social effects of job loss on the future of people who have become redundant and thus to have a fresh look at the sociology of unemployment. This research is based on a monographic study which combines qualitative interviews with questionnaire surveys conducted among 830 former workers of Moulinex plants located in Basse-Normandie, France, that is to say one third of the workforce not taken back by the firm Seb. The consequences on health, way of life, social and political relations are investigated since the five plants permanently closed in September 2001 through the temporal development of the redundant workers' career. The analysis of the job search and the return to employment is made through the emphasis of the inequalities inherited from the professional past and which display in the encounter with the labour market. This research is characterised by the attention given to the attachment towards the firm and to the experience in Moulinex.
