Observation and modelling of earth structures submitted to drying and wetting precesses

Abstract : Clayey fills are frequently submitted to drying and wetting cycles. The effects of such cycles on the observed behaviour of two experimental earth structures made of unsaturated clayey soils, is analysed. The soils were characterised by means of laboratory tests, then a finite element analysis of the mechanical behaviour of the embankments was performed, by using the CSNS programme of CESAR-LCPC. The numerical developments aimed at improving the numerical capabilities of the FE programme for the consolidation of unsaturated soils were checked against other solutions and test results.
