Early assessment of organic winter wheat performances (yield and grain protein content): a combination of regional agronomic diagnosis, modelling with weed indicators and analysing information sampled by farmers to manage their technical practices.

Abstract : As agriculture is expected to be more sustainable, organic farming offers an opportunity of respecting the environment. However, organic yields still remain under conventional ones. Yields and grain protein contents are highly variable and limited by numerous factors. Moreover, low grain protein contents limit commercialization of organic wheat as they are often under the required level of 10.5% by millers. In order to improve organic winter wheat performances, first, the limiting factors and cultivation techniques explaining yield and grain protein content variability were identified and ranked through a regional agronomic diagnosis carried out in south-eastern France. A innovative statistical method, mixing model, was used to carry out this diagnosis. Then, models, which predict the effect of an early weed density on yield and late weed density distributions, were developed, using quantile regression methods. Those models could help to adjust fertilisation and weed control strategies during the crop cycle. Finally, those previously identified weed indicators were compared to those used by farmers in their fields to manage cropping techniques. Prospects for the assessment of decision support system tool for fertilisation and weed control in organic winter wheat were also provided.
