Management of Amazonian grassland against weeds: biophysical conditions, agricultural practices and organization of grazing system in French Guiana

Johann Huguenin
Abstract : Guyanese grasslands result from major land use changes of the environment (savannas / forest), and the introduction of exotic species forage (Brachiaria spp. Digitaria swazilandensis). Their implantation began in the 1970s as a mean to favour the establishment of bovine farms on high productivity meadows. But, these meadows have been vulnerable to weeds invasion. These grasslands are sensitive to disturbance and register rapid succession of vegetation that generate their degradation. The direct eradication (or control) of weeds is expensive, difficult and results are poorly effective, and do not last long. According to the stakeholders of the sector, this was an important cause of vulnerability of these farm systems. In order to better control this phenomenon, they sought the participation of research to conduct joint studies on this issue. The approach led to a participatory research based on a local and multi-professional platform of stakeholders. This organization favoured the redrafting of the problematic, by considering the possibilities of sustaining these grasslands through the introduction of organizational procedures and husbandry practices that are suitable to control the ecological dynamics of invasive weeds. The assumptions related to the importance of practices (and the joint practices and strategy) were validated by synchronic and diachronic multi-criteria analysis issued from seven farms. Data collection resulted from monitoring, measurements and declarations issued from permanent interviews among the actors of the platform of exchange. The interviews were made at two main levels: the plot and the farm. Results have been used in a continuous work of representation with the partners in the study, as part of an "acting knowledge
