Approches experimentale et numerique de l'usinage a sec des composites carbone/epoxy

Abstract : The research topic is a preliminary study for maximizing the dry machining of carbon/epoxy. The proposed study deals with understanding the mechanisms of damage tools. It aims to determine the parameters of the tribological interface tool-workpiece (forces, temperature, friction, roughness) and confront them with the tools wear. Cutting operations generate heat and strains, and cut surfaces are often affected by damages. A study based on experimental observation of the formation of the chip (high speed video camera, force measurement, heat flow calculation, friction coefficient) and numerical simulation by the discrete element method is then established. The surface analysis carried out using complementary techniques (SEM, optical profilometry) has identified the different types of damage. A study of drilling composites allowed to view the damages created by a drill and to propose a best suited tool. The delamination of the last composite plies, caused by penetration of the drill is considered the major defect. A mathematical model can anticipate the penetration load of the drill. This model has been experimentally validated. A relation between the penetration load and cutting conditions and wear of drill has been proposed. The results of this study are interesting for the aeronautical industry. The approach based on the determination of loads through simulations using the discrete elements allowed correlating the formation mechanisms of the chip and removing material. The accuracy of numerical simulations depends on the ability to predict cutting loads and morphology of the chip in agreement with the experiment. Numerical simulations have led to obtaining a good correlation between predictions and experimental results.
