Interactions of foundations and expansive soils : pathology, calculations and experimental studies

Abstract : This report is divided into six chapters. In the first chapter the problems of expansive clayey soils around the world and in Morocco are reviewed, then their physical and mechanical properties, mineralogy and structure are described, with emphasis on their behaviour during wetting. In the second chapter, on the basis of the authors' experience, the various damages observed in buildings in Morocco because of the expansion of clayey soils are described. The following two chapters are devoted to the calculation of stresses in shallow foundations and of the foundation settlement or heave : Chapter 3 analyses the stress changes in reinforced concrete shallow foundations which are induced by the non homogeneous heave produced by soil wetting from a water source which can be located at any position with respect to the structure. Chapter 4 is devoted to the effect of the foundation load on the stress state in the soil and on the strains which develop upon wetting and can produce either settlement or heave, depending on the relative values of the swelling pressure and the vertical stress in the soil. The last two chapters present an experimental study of shallow foundations on expansive soils, which was performed in the city of Ouarzazate: In Chapter 5 the results of laboratory tests on soil samples taken at two depths under the foundations are presented and analysed in terms of water content effect on the deformations, permeability and resistance of the expansive clayey soils. The full scale experimental site and the results of the load tests performed on four shallow foundations at different stages of wetting and drying of the expansive soils are presented in Chapter 6. These results are then analysed with due account of the laboratory test results and calculation formulae presented in the preceding chapters.
