Abstract : This thesis deals with the improvement of video compression algorithms. The goal is to create methods that are efficient and realistic enough to be submitted to video standardization committees, in order to be integrated in a future video standard. The approaches selected are the use of competition based scheme and the suppression of competition information. A competing framework for better motion vector coding, integrated in the KTA, takes advantage, according to the rate distortion criterion, from the use of the spatial and temporal redundancies in the motion vector field. Moreover, an automatic adaptation of the predictors sets according to the video content is also proposed. Eventually, a new Intra coding mode, based on a 1D macroblock partitioning, which reduces the spatial distance between the reference signal and the current partition, is integrated to the Intra block modes of the norm. The compression standard H.264/AVC offers a higher number of competitions than his predecessors. To reduce the bit rate linked to the competition information, a part of the encoder intelligence is transferred to the decoder. This transfer enables to eliminate some motion vectors predictors indexes. It also enables to erase some Intra predictors according to the quantization parameters and to the reference signal. Eventually, by considering the motion information as a competition information, a motion estimation at the decoder side is implemented. All proposed schemes improve the coding efficiency compared to the reference. The combination of some of these methods offers an average percentage bit rate reduction of 20% compared to the H.264/AVC standard for a set of 1080p sequences.
