Emotionnal Architecture Scenographic studies in the works of Barragan (1940-1980)

Nicolas Gilsoul
Abstract : This research questions the mise-en-scene techniques used in the emotional architecture at a design level (in terms of atmosphere, space and time) and at a perception level (erosion, metamorphosis) Focused on seven Mexican projects designed by Luis Barragan (between 1940 and 1980), the research questions the heritage of the principles of composition and design process of the emotional architecture for an alternative and contemporary project. According to the main hypothesis of this research, in order to interfere on the visitor' emotions, the emotional architecture ensures the conscious or unconscious participation of the visitor and transforms him into an actor by anticipating (provoking) his movements and by offering him a space of freedom. Two questions are addressed: 1) what are the spatial modalities of the sensitive implication of the visitor? 2) Is the professional scenario developed by Barragan still efficient today and why? The research results are triple: at a theoretical level, it contributes to the recognition of the Luis Barragan works and it allows to address issues relating to the conception and the perception of atmospheres. At a practical level, it outlines the principles of mise-en-scene and highlights a typology of atmospheres which will allow to better integrate the visitor with his sensitive dimension in an alternative and contemporary project.
