ETUDE THEORIQUE ET EXPERIMENTALE D'UNE MICRO DECHARGE A CATHODE CREUSE A PRESSION INTERMEDIAIRE DANS L'ARGON

Abstract : Microplasmas are confined discharges on small spatial scales (typically several hundreds of micrometers) that offer a high stability for power densities of about 100 kW/cm3. The study of this kind of discharges began to develop in the middle of the 90s before undergoing an important expansion thanks to the experimental and theoretical works that have been performed in the past few years. Their interest lies in the fact that they can be generated at medium and high pressure with a very low applied voltage or injected power and because of possible applications in various fields such as surface treatment, light sources or spatial micro-propulsion. Microhollow cathode discharges (MHCD) are one type of microplasmas in which a several hundred micrometers diameter hole is drilled through an electrode-dielectric-electrode sandwich structure. In our device, we use a molybdenum-alumina-molybdenum sandwich in argon. On an experimental point a view, imaging and emission spectroscopy have been used to determine the light emission mechanisms, the discharge structure, the gas temperature and the electronic density. On a theoretical point of view, we have developed semi-analytical models. The results gave us scale laws and macroscopic behaviours and allowed us to verify the experimental interpretations. Despite the high amount of hypothesis and approximations in the different developed models, the comparison between theoretical and experimental results has allowed us to understand a part of the physics involved in the MHCD.
