Élaboration, caractérisation et optimisation de couches catalytiques cathodiques de piles à combustible PEM à partir d'aérogels de carbone

Abstract : Developing new non-polluting and fossil fuel free energy converters is a big environmental, economical and political challenge that Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells could fulfil. Such systems could be widely distributed thanks to performance improvement, cost reduction (by reducing platinum quantity used) and durability increase. This thesis aims at (i) providing an answer to these problems and at (ii) enabling to study mechanisms taking place in Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) by using model materials like carbon aerogels as cathode catalyst supports in PEMFC. To answer to these objectives, we studied the impact of the carbon support morphology on electrochemical performances in MEA. Then, we studied the impact of the cathode catalytic layer composition on performances, we compared various platinum deposit methods and finally we studied carbon aerogel ageing in MEA tested on a single cell bench. These studies showed the influence of the carbon support architecture on performances, the positive impact of PTFE use in the cathode catalytic layer and also that the choice of the platinum deposit protocol should be established depending on performance at t=0 and during ageing tests. Finally, the carbon aerogel ageing study highlighted the progress remaining to do in term of durability.
