Modélisation et simulation des gaz de blow-by dans un décanteur automobile.

Abstract : In this work, the accuracy of numerical simulations for predicting particle deposition in an oil separator is studied and compared to experimental data. First, a reliable experimental methodology is developed to produce blowby flow with a particle distribution similar to that that found in an engine. The PCS spectrometer PALAS was chosen to measure blow-by droplets because of its accuracy on the spectrum studied. Blowby granulometry is measured for two flow rates before and after the oil separator. The difference between the two measures gives the separator efficiency. In the same time, RANS simulations followed by Lagrangian particle tracking were achieved. The aim is to test the ability of RANS simulations to predict the deposition rate of oil particles in a separator. The numerical methodology developed in this article combined the use of a RANS k-ε model with a two layer wall boundary condition. This two layer boundary condition is set up thanks to the use of a mixed mesh composed of prismatic cells in the near wall area and of tetrahedral cells in the rest of the domain. Simulations are made without any turbulence dispersion models because of the moderate Reynolds number of the flow. Computations are compared with experimental results obtained specifically for this study. Calculations based on the methodology developed in this article lead to a good prediction of particle deposition for the two characteristic blow-by flow rates. This demonstrates that for moderate Reynolds number values the RANS approach can be successful for particle deposition predictions in industrial complicated geometry, provided that the near wall region is accurately represented. In this way numerical simulation can be a useful tool for the design and efficiency optimization of oil separators.
