Détoxification de condensats de distillerie par osmose inverse, échange d'ions et leur combinaison. Application au recyclage en fermentation alcoolique

Abstract : In beet distillery, recycling condensates stillage to the fermentation step would be an effective way to decrease wastewater production and water consumption. This wastewater, currently discarded in ponds, could be reused as fermentation dilution water provided the fermentation inhibitory compounds (carboxylic acids, phenolics and furans) were removed. Investigations were focused on physico-chemical processes with best ability for target compounds removal: reverse osmosis, ion exchange and adsorption. Best operating conditions and possible combinations were determined with selected membranes and convenient resins in order to propose possible treatments adapted to industrial cases. Impact of RO, IE and combined treatments on the growth kinetics and physiological state of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was investigated in continuous fermentation process to help the choice of an adequate detoxification process. Fermentable effect of treated condensates was linked to the process removal efficiency. RO completed by a subsequent ion-exchange step is the only process to produce a treated condensate that does not hinder yeast growth nor yeast productivity. This recommended scheme was designed for an industrial application with a 100 m³.h⁻¹ flow rate. According to operatory parameters, flow sheet of produced effluents and required reagents as well as the corresponding utilities were presented.
