Etude du frittage et des propriétés spectroscopiques de céramiques transparentes de CaF2 : Yb pour lasers de puissance

Abstract : This PhD is dedicated to the synthesis and the study of laser and spectroscopic properties of ytterbium doped calcium fluoride transparent ceramics. These ceramics will be used as solid state laser amplifier. First the advantages of transparent ceramics over glasses and single crystals are presented. Indeed, ceramics present high thermal conductivity, low synthesis temperature and large scale possibilities. Then we describe the process developed to obtain ytterbium doped calcium fluoride transparent ceramics and the impact of different process adjustments to decrease optical losses. The origin of the residual losses has been studied using transmission electron microscopy and showed defects present at grain boundaries. A spectroscopic study at 20 K has been conducted in order to show that ytterbium ions form clusters in our fluoride ceramics which are the luminescent centers. These clusters have also been evidenced by analyzing HAADF-STEM images. In the last part, the spectroscopic properties at 77 K, possible work temperature, and the laser demonstration have been studied.
