Étude théorique et expérimentale du reformage d'essence assisté par plasma hors équilibre

Abstract : The direct use of hydrogen as an energy vector is currently made difficult due to both the lack of distribution infrastructure, and to technical limitations concerning hydrogen storage. Before the attainment of a "direct hydrogen" economy, a possible transitional step could be the production of onboard hydrogen synthesis from conventional car fuels. Non-thermal, plasma-assisted reforming provides an alternative to conventional industrial catalytic reforming, which has limitations when applied to an onboard system. This study is the fruit of fifteen years of research in the field of plasma hydrocarbon conversion, initiated at the Center for Energy and Processes at the Ecole des Mines de Paris. The work involved the development and characterization of a nonthermal, plasma-reforming test bench. The experimental system, composed of a plasma torch and its individual power supply, was developed using two power supplies : a conventional one, based on a high-voltage transformer system, and an original electronic converter, based on resonant converter technology, which allows the continuous control of the mean discharge current under high-voltage, low-current conditions. The non-reactive, electrical characterization of the system composed of the plasma torch and the resonant converters revealed three discharge regimes that were highly dependent on thermal regimes and gas flow. Based on a thermodynamic study and on three chemical kinetics models, the octane-reforming modeling made clear both the main operating parameter influences and the role of plasma activity on reforming reactions. Experiment results were in line with theoretical results and compared with published work. Lastly, a study of the plasma reforming device as component of a global fuel cell / reformer system was presented, as well as outlooks of the current plasma technology.
