Élasticité et Interfaces : des gouttes et des plis

Abstract : This thesis is focused on the experimental study of the deformations generated by surface tension effects on flexible membranes. In the first part of our work we show experimentally how an electric field can be used to control the spontaneous wrapping of an elastic membrane around a water droplet. As the voltage is increased above a critical value the membrane unfolds completely. This transition is reversible, although it presents hysteresis. We propose scaling laws for the opening and closing critical voltages based on the interaction between surface tension, elastic and electric energies. In the second part we study the wrinkling of a flexible annulus floating on water caused by a difference in surface tension between its inside and outside edges. We have estimated simple criteria to determine the buckling threshold of the annulus and the wave length of the wrinkles, as well as the evolution of the wrinkle length beyond threshold. Finally, in the last part of our work we study the morphology of the wrinkling cascades appearing in different systems where a certain wave length is imposed at one of its edges and which evolves as a consequence of the discrete coalescence of wrinkle. We performed macrosco- pic experiments to characterize the properties of this cascades. We notice the existence of two different regimes which depend on the importance of the axial tension applied on the membrane. Our scaling laws are validated from hundreds of nanometers for graphene sheets to meters for ordinary curtains, which shows the universality of our description.
