Contribution à la caractérisation thermique et mécanique de la zone soudée en FSW

Abstract : Friction Stir Welding is an emerging joining technology for industry. To industrialize this process, we must study tool/material physical interaction and relations between weld quality and process parameters. In this context, we exploit experimental and numerical methods to understand the thermomechanical phenomena caused by the tool/material interaction during welding. Initially, we analyzed the mechanical aspect of the process by studying the mechanical efforts in FSW and material flow around the tool. A series of test runs was carried out to explain the energy aspect by studying mechanical and kinematic tensors between FSW tool and material. To study material flow, we proposed a simple numerical model allowing simulation of a laminar flow around a rotating cylinder which is suitable representative of the process. In addition, by means of an analogical model based on similarity laws, we used plasticine as a model material to simulate the flows in FSW. Secondly, we studied the thermal aspect of the process. An original experimental environment was carried out to measure the temperature on the tool. Temperature evolution was measured by using thermocouples placed in defined positions of FSW tool. To identify the heat flow, we presented a suitable methodology allowing an estimation of heat flow in different parts of the tool. Finally, through FSW joint characterization tests, like tensile test and microstructural observation, we explained some relations between weld quality, material and thermal flow as well as process parameters.
