Abstract : Chlorophyll fluorescence brings a new dimension to classical reflectance remote sensing of vegetation by providing a probe of the photosynthetic mechanism. A present challenging issue is the up-scaling from the well-known leaf level to the exploratory canopy level. I study the impact of the canopy structure on the fluorescence emission and his passive remote-sensing. A first step was the development of a specific protocol for quantitative comparison between leaf and canopy fluorescence spectra under natural illumination. This set-up, apply on a dedicated platform over different crop species, highlight key mechanisms involved in the modification of fluorescence emission between both scale. Numerical simulations with FluoSAIL confirm these findings. A second step focus on the passive measurement of sun induced fluorescence itself. Absorption band infilling method was use over a senescent wheat canopy (3D but non fluorescent) to quantify the impact of structure related BRDF on fluorescence retrieval. Simulation with SAIL (canopy reflectance) and MODTRAN (atmospheric radiative transfer) was used to identify experimental conditions which minimise the effects. During experimental campaign, joint measurements of fluorescence, phenology and assimilation allow study of relation between fluorescence indexes and hydric stress, biomass increase or CO2 assimilation at canopy level.
