Impact des caractéristiques de l'information délivrée par un système virtuel dans une tâche de recherche de cibles : perspectives en rééducation cognitive

Abstract : This thesis was led in the context virtual cognitive rehabilitation. After brain injury, cognitive rehabilitation aims to enable the autonomy of the patients in the instrumental Activities of Daily Living (iADL). VR offers to the patient the possibility to experience controlled simulated activities of daily living that can be repeated as often as necessary and gradual with regards to the state of the patient. During the patient session, the VR system provides various kinds of information for different purposes: display of the virtual environment, understanding of the task, but also highlighting functionalities or delivery of instructions. In this thesis, we are interested in improving participants' performance in a virtual iADL. Our objective is to study the effects of the information delivered by the virtual system on participants' performance in the context of virtual rehabilitation. Previous studies already showed that an effect exists on healthy subjects' performance mainly in spatial orientation and navigation tasks in simple virtual environments. In order to answer to this question, we studied the process of exchange of information between the user and the virtual system and we built a taxonomy of the virtual information. Then, we suggested a theoretical study on our experimental tool the Virtual Action Planning Supermarket (VAP-S). On the basis of the previous studies, the following stage was to develop new functionalities in the VAP-S allowing it to deliver additional stimuli that enrich the information presents in the VAP-S. In this purpose, we defined an "Additional Software Stimulus" (ASS) by any additional information, delivered by the virtual system which comes to increase the present information in the virtual environment and whose absence from the virtual environment does not forbid the fulfillment of the task. We were interested in the auditory and visual ASS. Thanks to three experimental studies, we studied the relationship between the characteristics of the virtual information and the performance of the participants in the task. The first study concerns the relationship between the increase of the field of view and the performance. It shows that, among patients with brain injury and healthy subjects, it is possible to improve the perception of the virtual objects and to reduce the number of errors in the task by using a large screen and a large field of view in the experiments. The second study concerns the impact of the non-contextual ASS on the performance. It shows that the performance of patients with brain injury and healthy subjects decreases when non contextual ASS are delivered during the task. The third study concerns the relationship between the contextual ASS and the performance. It shows that the deliverance of ASS related to the interaction improves the performance of patients with brain injury and healthy subjects in the task even they are not informed about the semantic link between the delivered stimuli and the task. To extend this work, it would be interesting to confirm the results found in our experiments by testing the effects of other ASS developed in the VAP-S. It would also be interesting to conduct studies on the effects of combining ASS (auditory and visual) on the performance in the task. Keywords: Information, Virtual system, cognitive rehabilitation.
