Management stratégique et technologies de réseau : analyse des déterminants de la compatibilité et de la coopération. Recherche empirique sur les déterminants de l'interbancarité monétique en France 1985-1996

Abstract : When there are strong interdependencies between rival firms at the production level, the question of the nature of the coordination process of economic activities arises: what institutions can facilitate interactions between actors, Market or Interfirm Cooperation ? This is the key theoretical question (relevant both for economics and management) that dominates this research project, which drives us to determine the specificity of interfirm cooperation as an institution in which rules of the game are endogenously negociated by firms themselves. Indeed, presence of network externalities is a situation of interdependency between rival firms. Whereas traditional literature on network externalities and standardization processes focuses strongly on the emergence of spontaneous standards, this research aims at analysizing what are the determinants of cooperative standardization processes, generally speaking and in the particular case of French banking cards and proposes a theoretical model. It is often said and repeated that " interbancarity ", that is to say French total compatibility of banking cards issued by all banks, accepted in all money ATM and by all franchised traders, is the result of the decisions taken by French authorities imposing cooperation to banks in France. On the opposite, this empirical research shows that compatibility between cards systems is the result of the will of French banks leading their own strategic development. Indeed, that cooperation in cards, which begun very early in 1967 and that took the form of an agreement in 1984 between leader banks, is a successful and conscious strategy for banks and for users as well. This is the main result of this work. This empirical analysis of the determinants of the interbancarity decision is achieved on the basis of a database elaborated for the purpose of the research, statistical approaches and simulations allovving to identify the strategic and institutional conditions that led to the emergence and the stability of the cooperation process. It is shown that interbancarity corresponds to an institution, that is to say a framework for firms interaction, which doesn't mean at all the absence of competition between them.
