Elaboration, Propriétés optiques et applications de suspensions colloïdales de nanobâtonnets de LaPO4

Abstract : Synthesis and assembly of anisotropic nanoparticles is a key issue towards devices performing optical polarization or magnetic properties. This thesis presents a novel method to control the orientation of lanthanum phosphate (LaPO4) nanorods by their liquid crystalline property in a state of well-stabilized dense colloidal suspension. Alike with the organic liquid crystals, these nanorods are spontaneously organized in solution, and their orientation can be controlled by applying an electric field. Also, these nanorods can be assembled into transparent solid thin films performing a remarkably high birefringence useful for display devices etc. Finally, when doped with europium, LaPO4 nanorods exhibit luminescence of which the signal depends sharply on their orientation. An original application of this property for liquid flow sensor is presented.
