Suivi et simulation de la qualité de l'eau en milieu littoral par télédétection et modélisation

Abstract : This work contributes to the concern about sustainable development and integrated coastal zone management, with the overall objective of improving methods for remote sensing monitoring of coastal waters. We develop a set of tools and methods for monitoring and simulation of environmental conditions in the coastal zone, based on integration of remote sensing data, numerical modelling of the radiative transfer in the atmosphere-ocean system and in situ measurements. We focus on case II waters and we propose ad hoc robust and innovative solutions for operational applications. An analysis of operational requirement for EO-derived bio-geophysical data allows us to draw up a comparative and critical overview of historical methods of radiative transfer, and to stress their capability from an operational perspective. The needs for high spatial-resolution quantitative information on the nearshore coastal zone is emphasized, as well as robust methods requiring no or few a priori knowledge, which would be easily transferable from one site to another. A detailed analysis of radiative transfer processes in turbid shallow-waters allows us to identify major optical processes, for which ad hoc parameterizations are required in order to achieve a satisfactory optical modelling of these media. A set of tools and methods is developed and integrated in prototype software for remote-sensing and optical modelling analysis of shallow-waters. It includes different forward optical models, and image processing functionalities, matching operational needs. Methods robustness is evaluated through sensitivity analyses. The compatibility with the upcoming very high-resolution spacebome ocean-color sensors (MERIS, NEMO-COIS) has been a key constraint to the present developments. An optimal exploitation of the prototype will be achieved through its integration into a Marine Information System.
