Prise en compte du gonflement des terrains dans le dimensionnement des revêtements des tunnels

Abstract : During the last decades, observations in tunnels have reported numerous damages in swelling grounds. This phenomenon concerns various formations spread in geologic eras and may affect future tunnels. This thesis aims at developing a design method for tunnel linings in swelling ground.

Based on information provided by in situ observations, laboratory tests and existing design methods, an elastoplastic behaviour law was been established to simulate the development of swelling in the ground following a change of state of stress and an ingress of water. In this model, the swelling law is assumed elastic and three-dimensional, with the swelling deformation being proportional to the logarithm of stress ; the model takes account of the possible anisotropy of swelling associated with the stratification of the ground.

The model was implemented in the finite element code CESAR-LCPC and was validated on two levels : on the one hand, on a sample of swelling material subjected to a swelling test and, on the other hand, on an instrumented tunnel directly concerned with the swelling phenomenon.
Specific swelling tests were used to identify the different swelling parameters. The calibration of the swelling law gave satisfactory results on several different swelling materials.
The model was then used to analyse the ground response observed on the Northern tube of Chamoise tunnel, for which in situ measurements highlighted the development of the swelling of marls under the invert ; this analysis lead to a closer agreement with the in situ measurements than conventional models ; in particular, the asymmetry of behaviour of invert was well reproduced with the model and computed displacements in the ground were closer to the observed results.
