Abstract : Middleware render distributed applications independent of a particular environment, but paradoxically introduce a new dependency upon a distribution model. Interoperability across applications must be integrated in middleware architecture: using static gateways has prohibitive cost and combinatorial explosion. Generic middleware architectures allow code sharing between personalities implementing different distribution models. We extend them by introducing the schizophrenic architecture, decoupling aspects expose to application objects and to remote middleware, through a neutral layer that implements recurring middleware functionality independently of personalities. This architecture contributes to interoperability by allowing efficient collocation of personalities. We present PolyORB, our prototype of a schizophrenic middleware, and this show that the proposed architecture is operational and efficient.
