Abstract : The experiment described in this report is a part of the evolution in research in atomic physics towards the development of miniaturised devices to generate and manipulate coherent matter waves. This thesis presents the realisation of a Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute gas of 87Rb atoms in a magnetic trap generated by a microfabricated structure, called atom chip. In our case, the chip is made of gold wires deposited on a silicon substrate by optical lithography and electroplating. This report decribes this experiment in its entirety, from initial motivations to the technical choices to the experimental results. Experimentally, a macroscopic magneto-optical trap is first loaded with atoms from a rubidium thermal source (dispenser), the magnetic field of this trap being generated by macroscopic coils located outside the vacuum chamber. Atoms are then transferred to a magneto-optical trap close to the surface of the atom chip, whose quadrupolar magnetic field is produced by the current circulating in a U-shaped microfabricated wire. Finally, atoms are trapped in a Ioffe-Pritchard type magnetic trap created by the current circulating in a Z-shaped wire on the same chip. The temperature of the magnetically trapped atomic is decreased by rf-evaporative cooling to reach Bose-Einstein condensation. When the height of the atomic cloud above the surface of the chip decreases, the cloud fragments into several pieces. This phenomenum corresponds to a potential roughness due to an inhomogeneïty of the current density in the Z-shaped wire.
