Variations volumiques des matrices cimentaires aux très jeunes âges : approche expérimentale des aspects physiques et microstructuraux

Abstract : The shrinkage of cement paste is often the main origin of numerous cracking that have been
observed in structures made of concrete. In this research we were interested only to study the
autogenous shrinkage at early ages, its effects on the structure, parameters that influence the
amplitude of this type of shrinkage and its origin.
Autogenous shrinkage is a physical consequence of the so called Le Chateliers contraction,
and it is a phenomenon well known in the industry of cements. In concretes in which W/C
ratio is around 0.5, the effects of this shrinkage are negligible. The development and the use
more and more frequent of concretes of high and very high performances pose new problems
on the apparition and the measure of the autogenous shrinkage.
In the first and second chapters, we examined briefly the literature which concerning
structuring of cement paste to its different stages, mechanisms of hydration process, the
different types of shrinkage and the technique to measure every one, factors that influence the
In the third chapter we have developed a method that permits to measure volume variations
since the end of the mixing continue on a period of active time until three days. In this thesis
we present results obtained on a formulation of ultra high performance mortar, results from
various mortars and cement pastes.
In the fourth chapter, microstructural, chemical, mineralogical, and physical analyses are
presented also. They permit to give interpretation on the origin of autogenous shrinkage. In
the same way the effect of additions of C3A on the same type of clinker, finally a comparative
study has been made.
