Transport et caractérisation des matières en suspension dans le bassin versant de la Seine : identification de signatures naturelles et anthropiques

Abstract : Most of the pollutants responsible for the perturbations of river environments are controlled
by the behaviour of suspended sediment. Although the role of suspended sediment in the
contaminants transport trough river systems is now well established, a major concern which
remains is to identify the suspended sediment sources and sinks. Here, our aim was to develop
a method allowing to describe the potential sources of suspended sediments but also to follow
the transfer of these particles throughout the Seine basin. This methodology combines:
-analysis of up to 25 elements using instrumental neutron activation analysis.
-sampling, using sediment traps, covered the whole Seine basin and performed over a
three year period beginning in 1999,
-statistical analysis of the set of data using principal component analysis.
The developed method allowed to shed light on the relationship between the spatial
distribution of those elements and the lithological and anthropogenic factors.
