Télédétection pour la qualité de l'air en milieu urbain

Abstract : Air quality in urban environment is one of the major concerns of the authorities responsible of cities. Decision-makers need tools allowing the air quality surveillance. Currently, it is impossible to precisely know the spatial distribution of the atmospheric pollutants. Organizations in charge of the air quality stress that there is a need of means to refine this knowledge. Satellite imagery is one of these means; therefore we undertook Ph.D. works in order to bring useful information to practitioners. The analysis of synthetic aperture radar images (SAR), of Nantes city and its suburbs, allows us to determine factors influencing the urban perception in SAR images. From this analysis was derived the idea to map the aerodynamic roughness over the whole city. This parameter, characterizing the local morphology, is necessary to model the dispersion of the pollutants above cities. To do that mapping, we have used the radar imagery alone or used conjointly with the optical imagery. We have undertaken another study focussed on obtaining an innovative method, making use of optical data in the thermal infrared band, in order to map the spatial distribution of the concentration field of suspended particles (black smoke). Factors affecting interactions between pollutants and other spectral bands, visible and infrared, have also been studied. Being concerned about operational methods, with both the radar or optical imagery, the results of the innovating methods are compared to those obtained with conventional ones.
