MIROIRS ATOMIQUES : DIFFRACTION EN INCIDENCE RASANTE ET RUGOSITE D'UN MIROIR MAGNETIQUE

Résumé

We present a study of the diffraction of cold rubidium atoms at grazing incidence from an evanescent wave. This study was done in normal incidence using a evanescent standing wave moving along the glass-vacuum interface to simulate the grazing incidence geometry. The sign and the number of the diffraction orders is interpreted using a non-scalar theory based on stimulated Raman transitions between Zeeman sublevels of the atom. The key roles of both the polarization of the evanescent wave and of the initial atomic internal state have been demonstrated. In addition, the study of the diffraction efficiency has revealed an oscillation which we interpret as an interference between different atomic trajectories in the evanescent wave. Calculations based on the semi-classical Landau-Zener model (with 2 or 3 levels) or on the numerical resolution of the Schrödinger equation (with 2, 3 or 5 levels) allowed us to confirm the phase and the period of the observed oscillation, and showed their high sensitivity to the van der Waals atom-wall interaction. We also present a study of a current carrying magnetic mirror for paramagnetic atoms. The maximum of the reflecting potential associated with the magnetic field has been measured as a function of the internal atomic state. By measuring the angular distribution of the reflected atoms, we have demonstrated the presence of non-specular reflection which which we relate to the roughness of the mirror. The influence of the parity of the number of wires and the effect of an improperly oriented bias field on the measured roughness have been shown. This roughness has been reduced by adding extra wires to compensate for the finite size effects.
