Propriétés mécaniques de films polymères ultraminces

Abstract : This thesis describes a few experimental approaches designed to measure the mechanical properties of ultrathin polymer films (with thickness between 20 and a few hundreds of nanometers). Our experiences aim to understand the effect of confinement and of the surfaces on their properties. We present mainly the conception and the use of a dewetting experiment of thin films on a liquid substrate. The technique is shown to allow a direct and simple measurement of the viscoelastic properties of the polymer films above $T_g$. The results obtained on ultrathin films bring evidence that the rubbery plateau of polystyrene is unaffected by the confinement up to a fraction of the coil size. For the same films, the viscosity is found to be greatly reduced as compare to the bulk value. Some other phenomenon encountered during the wetting or dewetting of polymer films are also discussed. In a second part, we present another experiment based on a wrinkling instability occuring in the glassy state. A simple observation of the wrinkles allow to follow the variations of the elastic modulus. Finally, we report an AFM study that aims to investigate the effect of the surfaces and the interfaces in a filled elastomer.
