Innovation et stratégies d'acquisitions dans l'industrie pharmaceutique : analyses empiriques

Abstract : An introductory chapter presents the recent mutations of the pharmaceutical industry as well as the concepts of radical patents and strategic patenting used in the three chapters of the dissertation. The second chapter analyzes the innovation performance of individual firms prior to the merger wave of the 1990s. Our results indicate that radical patenting is not persistent in the short term and that large pharmaceutical groups experience difficulties in producing radical patents. The third chapter considers the technological determinants of mergers and acquisitions in the pharmaceutical industry and identifies the technological quality of the potential targets' patent portfolios as a fundamental selection criteria. Accordingly, the final chapter shows that these mergers and acquisitions have improved the technological performance of acquirers in biotechnology : in the years following such operations, the proportion of radical biotechnology patents in the acquirers' patent portfolios has increased more rapidly than for non-acquirers.
