Etude des mécanismes de transfert de molécules organiques en osmose inverse. Application au recyclage des condensats issus de la concentration des vinasses de distilleries

Abstract : Reverse osmosis seems to be interesting to treat distilleries condensates and recycle them into alcoholic fermentation. It would retain the organic molecules who inhibit fermentation. However, the retention mechanisms of these molecules are still poorly understood and the optimization of the process remains empirical.
Methods of liquid and gaseous chromatography have been developed and/or improved to quantify inhibitor compounds and a fermentation test has been developed. The membranes the most appropriate as well as a spiral-wound pilot membrane have been selected to conduct the study.
The molecules and membranes have been characterized more accurately: the first with molecular descriptors, the second by zeta potential and angles of contact measurements. Because of these properties, phenyl-2-ethanol, butyric acid and furfural adsorb heavily on the membranes. The acetic acid dissolves in interstitial water.
These interactions partially explain the transfer of solutes in the process, but other phenomena have to be considered: diffusion in the membrane, permeate flux, competitions between molecules.
The use of membrane ESPA2 at 10 bar and natural pH can lead to a fermentable permeate up to a volume reduction factor of 8.
A model was developed to take into account the interactions and represent the industrial process. The adsorption constants are obtained experimentally while the diffusion coefficient is adjusted.
