Propriétés thermomécaniques de cermets à base de ferrite spinelle : influence de l'oxydation

Abstract : In order to replace consumable carbon electrodes in the Hall-Heroult electrolysis process, the development of inert anodes resistant to oxidation is a technical challenge for main leaders in aluminum production. Some of the recent researches were focused on promising and original cermets constituted of a dual phase ceramic matrix and dispersed metallic particles, which have sufficient electric conductivity and corrosion resistance at high temperature. However, up to now, the studies did not really take into account the thermomechanical aspect which is a major concern for ceramics, because of their brittle behaviour and their thermal shock sensitivity. Supervised by the Rio Tinto-Alcan company and its Voreppe Research Centre, the present work has been focused on the development of a numerical tool integrating the mechanical behaviour of the material in order to calculate anodes failure probabilities. The work has been initially based on an experimental investigation of the mechanical properties from room temperature to electrolysis temperature: Weibull statistics parameters, elastic modulus, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficient, creep resistance... The finite elements calculations also take into account the progressive oxidation of the material and the thermomechanical loadings induced by the environment.
