Abstract : This study deals with the reinforced masonry structures of hollow units with reinforcement embedded in the horizontal joints. An experimental campaign is being finalized whose objective consists in identifying the behaviour of the materials which make up the reinforced masonry. An original test to be performed on a set of blocks in inclined arrangement with regard to the stress is being perfected so as to determine the shearing characteristics (G12). The behaviour of the mortar joints is identified under compression and shear testing. A nonlinear friction criterion for the block-joint interface is proposed, and reports the experimental information correctly. The third part is devoted to modelling and to the integration of the model into the CESAR design code (LCPC). We regarded the masonry as a material made of two components: on the one hand, the mortar joints (the mortar being either reinforced or not reinforced), on the other hand the hollow units considered to be homogeneous. A specific contact element was developed; it has an elastic rigidity with regard to the normal stresses located on the plane of the interface. The masonry units were modelled as an equivalent orthotropic material. The mathematical equations which describe the mechanical behaviour of each material were developed. The apparent non-linearity of the behaviour of the units is dealt with within the scope of the formalism of elastoplasticity. Finally, the last part of this report provides us with a validation of the model proposed. The results obtained satisfactorily conform to the experiments on a both qualitative and quantitative level. The model may then serve as a tool designed to predict and assess the ultimate loads carried by such structures.
