Pratiques de gestion des effluents d’élevage en zone de montagne. L'exemple du Massif central

Abstract : The management of manure has been essential in the history of agriculture. With the emergence of synthetic mineral fertilizers and mechanization, management has been neglected and dramatically modified. The renewed attention given to waste and the problems that can be correlated imply a better knowledge of management practices, especially in mountain areas seldom studied. The Massif Central was chosen as the study area because of the diversity of soil and climate conditions and existing farming systems. An analysis of available concepts and models has resulted in a conceptual model for managing manure suitable for this study. A comprehensive approach to management practices was made at the farm level with three complementary methods. The monitoring of actual practices in three farms shows how important is the amount of time dedicated to this management. Surveys carried out in 30 farms spread over three territories (Aubrac, Millavois and Sancy) show a wide variety of manure management practices, which however allows to distinguish 12 types of management. The following experiments on 11 sites in the Massif Central, in partnership with the relevant Agriculture Chambers, stressed the longterm agronomic impact of manure. Beyond the consideration of the rules (land application sites, quantities, practice’s registration...) and constraints of each livestock farming system (buildings, field pattern, equipment, manure’s type...), the agronomy is the first factor called up by farmers to implement and evolve manure’s management practices. Furthermore, the farmer modifies or changes his practices according to social and territorial factors too often neglected. This study emphasizes the conciliation role of the farmer who has to synthesize recommendations and expectations of all stakeholders.
