Étude du vieillissement des fontes à graphite lamellaire en vue de amélioration de leur usinabilité

Abstract : Machining cast iron parts immediately after pouring them leads to problems due to having to stock them for several days before finishing operations. During this time, the raw parts are subjected to age strengthening which increases cast iron’s mechanical properties, particularly hardness and rigidity. First, the aim of this study was to observe cast iron age strengthening using several techniques of characterization developed in the laboratory such as special hardness and natural resonance frequency measurement. Then, the objective was to identify the parameters which control this phenomenon (in particular its length and amplitude) and their consequences. Casting trial parts representative of industrial parts was necessary in order to obtain special metallurgies (changing chemical compositions and cooling rates) while avoiding industrial-scale problems. This study allows one to see the influence of the chemical composition (nitrogen and titanium rate) and cooling rate on cast iron age strengthening. Moreover, it was possible to propose a specific model for the prediction of Renault cast iron age strengthening length and amplitude.
