Modélisation bioéconomique spatialisée des effets de l'usage des sols sur le bilan environnemental du bioéthanol lignocellulosique

Abstract : In a context of curbing the GHG emissions of the transport sector in France, this PhD thesis focuses on the environmental assessment of second generation biofuels produced from miscanthus and switchgrass. We started by testing and validating the agro-ecosystem model CERES-EGC for these two candidate crops. Simulations were regionalized at the scale of France with different levels of nitrogen inputs, and two climatic horizons. An economic dimension was introduced by coupling the outputs of CERES-EGC with the economic model AROPAj. This coupling was essential for the calculation of direct land use change effects (LUC). Those were combined with the CERES-EGC outputs to procude a spatialized LCA taking into account the pedoclimatic conditions in terms of yield, nitrogen emissions and LUC. This environmental assessment showed that miscanthus and switchgrass reduced GHG emissions by 76% to 96% compared to gasoline, taking into account LUC. Crop yield and reactive N emissions depended on the rate of fertilizer N applied. Miscanthus came out as more competitive and less harmful than switchgrass in France. In the long run the two cultures are still more competitive.
