Conception d'un nano-drone à ailes vibrantes

Abstract : This research aims at designing a 20-mg vibrating-wing nanodrone. A number of challenges arise at this scale. Previous work led to a prototype that generated a lift force equal to its weight but insufficient for take-off. The goal is therefore (i) to understand how to generate higher lift, and (ii) to optimise the structure accordingly. The first work lead is the interaction of air with the structure, studied with two distinct models: first as a nonlinear modal damping and second as an aerodynamic force generated by a flexible nanodrone wing. It allows determining lift generation strategies and validates the actuation principle of the drone, called modal combination. This principle consists in exciting a structure with a bending mode and a twisting mode of the wings at a phase shift quadrature frequency. If the modes are close enough, the motion is resonant at the excitation frequency. Since this principle relies heavily on the design of the structure, the design itself is thus the second work lead. A structural code modelling the drone as a beam truss with Euler-Bernoulli kinematics is developed. The code is then integrated into a parametric optimisation algorithm which cost-function is based mostly on the simulated frequency responses. These tools enable the efficient design of new prototype architectures that are promising.
