Abstract : The bioactivity of a bone substitute may be increased in various ways, in particular by adapting the size and shape to the patient’s bone defect and optimizing its macro-porous architecture. OsseoMatrix society is developing a new concept of custom made bone implant in hydroxyapatite, manufactured by Selective Laser Melting of powder bed (SLM). These implants are fabricated directly from the scan file of the patient’s skull, with the 3D shape desired. However, there are insufficient studies about the manufacture of ceramic parts by the SLM process and the main limitation is its poor absorptivity in the near infra-red wavelength which is the most frequently used in SLM. To overcome this limitation, this study considers the use of an absorbent additive to improve the beam/HA coupling. The aim of this study is to understand and control the phenomenon that occurs during laser/powder interaction to obtain healthy implants. Physicochemical properties of HA powder will directly impact on the quality and biocompatibility of the final bone substitute. For that reason, the most suitable thermal and physical treatments to produce HA powder were defined. The influence of laser and powder parameters on powder bed densification was assessed through a parametric study. It has led to a model that allowed to determine the effect of linear energy on the volume interaction and to define the most suitable parameters to obtain dense parts. Parts with complex shapes, macro-porosity and relative densities up to 70 % have been manufactured, proof that SLM of HA has become possible.
