La transformation des situations des agriculteurs et agricultrices en transition agroécologique : analyse du soutien des collectifs de pairs par le prisme de la théorie de l’enquête

Abstract : The process of transformation of farmers' situations within the framework of the agro-ecological transition (AET) is at the heart of this phD. Peer collectives, through their exchanges, are perceived as key resources for the agroecological transition of male and female farmers, although their role in the transformation of the experience is not specified. To shed light on this point, I chose to study the link between what is exchanged in the collective and the evolution of the work situations of the farmers in this collectives. To grasp what is at stake in this articulation, we have mobilized an epistemology of practice, proposed by John Dewey, through the theories of inquiry and valuation. Thus, from a perspective motivated by the challenges of accompanying this process of transformation of experience, my purpose is to construct an intelligibility of the way in which exchanges between peers are inscribed in inquiries and put into motion the situation of farmers and, thus, their experience. To do this, I worked with two groups. Group A, followed for two years, is a group of about fifteen farmers from the BASE network, who meet during field visits to discuss their farming practices throughout the agricultural season. Group B, whose exchanges we followed via a WhatsApp digital platform for 7 months, is a group of about 100 people, with a diversity of actors, affiliated with the DEPHY and Fermes 30 000 programs. I have shaped part of the empirical data into narratives of experience, an intermediary that allows me to apprehend the dynamics of the evolution of farmers' situations and the articulations with the collectives. The dialogue between theories of inquiry and valuation and our empirical data has allowed us to build analytical frameworks to study: 1) the support of inquiry in the exchanges between peers, 2) the induction of indeterminacy by the scaffolding between peers, and finally 3) the effective support of the exchanges to the transformation of the situations of the farmers interviewed. Thus, we show that by engaging in the agroecological transition, the farmers engage in a series of inquiries of indeterminate situations that emerge in the course of their work. The content exchanged between peers is captured and becomes a support to the transition when it feeds the process of inquiry at the point where the farmer is on his or her journey: by inducing indeterminacy, by contributing to the institution of the problem, by suggesting solutions or by encouraging the development of reasoning and the experimentation of these solutions. This support is also part of the transaction of the individual and his or her environment by participating in the movements between the experiential elements of the situation and the ideal elements to resolve the indeterminacy. This movement is mediated by the examination of consequences, projected or concrete, and their valuation. Activity of valuation is at the heart of the subject's inquiry so that it steers the action in a desirable and sustainable direction for the subject. From a supporting perspective, our conceptual and methodological proposals are avenues to be developed in intervention and training contexts. They open a way to think about the support of farmers as creative actors of their situated work. They also shed light on the role of peers in scaffolding inquiry and, more broadly, for agricultural development actors, while highlighting the research, training and intervention issues.
