Abstract : The simplification of cropping systems has led to an increase in the consumption of chemical inputs, winter oilseed rape being one of the most emblematic crop of this trend. The introduction of frost-sensitive legume living mulches would potentially improve the crop performances by providing two ecosystem services: weed regulation and biological nitrogen supply to the cash crop during spring. However, the introduction of these species could increase the interspecific competition, leading to a decrease in winter oilseed rape performances.The aims of this work were i) to quantify the ability of legume living mulches to supply these ecosystem services, in various environmental conditions, in relation to the oilseed rape performances ii) to analyse the mechanisms involved and iii) to identify the explicative legume functional traits. From a two-years experimental assessment, we compared seven candidate legume species (and three legume mixtures), intercropped with winter oilseed rape, in contrasted levels of soil mineral nitrogen availability.Results show that the presence of legume living mulch generally led to a significant decrease in the weed abundance and biomass in autumn to up to 75% for the most efficient species, without damaging the rape performances. The presence of the legume dead mulch during the following spring led to higher amount of nitrogen uptake in the winter oilseed rape (until 40 kgN.ha-1more in comparison to the sole crop). This nitrogen bonus was mainly explained by higher mineralisation from legume residues but also by other facilitation mechanisms such as a better nitrogen use efficiency. Finally, simple functional traits, related to the legume radiation interception ability during the autumn and some mulch physico-chemical traits were identified and led to a better understanding of the legume performances and the competition/facilitation mechanisms involved.
