Integrated animal health management studied via the prism of work : the case of dairy farms in the French Grand Ouest region

Dairy farming is under pressure to improve and implement a more preventive and systemic approach to animal health, while at the same time being subject to constant changes: herd expansion, introduction of digital technology and greater variability in the size and composition of work groups. These transformations of work in livestock systems have consequences on the implementation of a more systemic vision of animal health. Indeed, these transformations lead to a greater diversity of dairy farming systems in which the way in which work organization and health management are combined is not well known. As there is little scientific literature describing the work components that interact with health management, this thesis proposes the concept of integrated animal health management (IHM) to link these two dimensions and produce new knowledge. IHAM is then understood as the set of knowledge and skills coordinated in a heterogeneous work group to maintain the health balance of the herd. Two main steps were implemented to produce knowledge on the integrated animal health management approach through the prism of work- characterize the breeding systems by linking their work expectations, particularly with respect to the productivity of this factor on the one hand, the organization (labor, equipment, management) and finally the management of health from a preventive and curative point of view. Qualitative surveys were conducted with the pilots of a panel of 10 breeding systems representing a diversity of size, labor, technical system. They allowed the identification of 7 variables characterizing the work-health link. With the extension of the survey to a larger panel of farms (n=50), we produced a typology of systems showing how these variables are combined in the breeding systems.- To characterize the operational management of care, by looking at all the members of the collective working on the dairy farm of these same 10 farms. The study of the distribution of knowledge, skills and registers of intervention (practices, means of communication) within the group allowed us to conceptualize what we call "technical care itineraries" applied to mastitis and calves. We highlight the importance of the composition of the workforce and the distribution of tasks on these itineraries.Through the chosen discipline, the aim is to explore and explain the links between integrated animal health management and work in dairy farming, which have not yet been made.
